In the era of dirt cheap airfare, it’s easy to forget that there are other ways to travel.
For instance: BOAT! Yesterday, I took the Stena Line from Rosslare, Ireland to Fishguard, Wales. The crossing took about 3.5 hours.
Having grown up with BC Ferries, I felt at home on this vessel. However, there were a few differences from the ships at home:
1. Sweet Curious George-branded kids area! They should hire a skinny guy in a yellow hat to lurk around here. Or maybe not.
2. The “café,” where people were acting even less mature than the children in the play area. It was PACKED with boozing sports teams/stag parties/apelike men in general and reeked of booze. I’m sure it’s not like that every day. But at 11am, it felt like a pub at 11pm. Hint: upgrade to Stena Plus.
3. PET CAM. So you can keep an eye on Brew or Sassy Cat. Also, it gives the dogs with a penchant for performance the opportunity to shine.
Three cheers for arrival on U.K. soil!
Fishguard is boldly rockin’ the lime.
I stayed in the formidable Manor Town House in Fishguard. It is owned by a super friendly young couple, Helen and Chris. Despite the elegant touches it wasn’t the least bit stuffy.
Great view of Fishguard Harbour from my room.
I’m loving the look in the lounge here. There’s something very UK about this clean/sparse decor with a hint of vintage. It reminds me a lot of my post on Monachyle Mhor in Scotland. Is there a name for this style?
Dinner was quite the event: local art gallery owner Myles Pepper hosts occasional dinners in Café Celf. If you’re looking to mingle with locals and enjoy a bit of a Welsh serenade, this is the place to do it!

Wow, what a view!
Haha! So true about the big burly men on the ferries. I once took the ferry from Scotland to N. Ireland and back and this was my observation as well – although it was a lot more crowded because there was a motorcycle race event going on. The brutish Scot bikers were a wee bit intimidating to say the least.
Very much enjoyed your entries on your Ireland trip! Thanks!
Great photos!
Like new site, but gotta say the picture of you in the top left corner freaks me out. Doesn’t really look like you. Maybe something with better resolution?
It’s just temporary. Going to get a new one soon.
