tipsshuteye
Late night departures, delays and cancellations mean that sooner or later most travellers will find themselves struggling to get some shuteye on a filthy linoleum floor or rock-hard chair. Here are some tips for maximizing sleep at the train/bus station or airport:
1. Prostrate priority
If you can't sleep in your dining room chair at home after even the heartiest dose of tryptophan, don't think it will be any easier in a noisy waiting lounge. Find a hideaway where you can fully stretch out (several chairs together, beneath a bench, etc).
2.
Location shouting
Stay far, far away from all attractions. These include vending machines, water fountains, washrooms and even windows, which seem to magnetically draw rude loudmouths at 3 a.m. Nestle up against a plain wall for greater success.
3.
Make your bed
No, you won't find a floor laden with antique chewing gum in Sleep Country's showroom, but deluding yourself is key. A lightweight hostel sheet and inflatable pillow provide mock comfort. Kick off your shoes and even slip into pajamas if necessary.
4.
Security guard
Nightmares of having your bag ripped off will often steal sleep. Rest easier by wrapping a strap around a wrist or leg to discourage thieves and create a warning system.
5.
Dull the senses
ALWAYS carry a decent set of earplugs and a backup pair unless you fancy a soothing mix of floor polishing machines and lost-and-found announcements. Also, shield yourself from the fluorescent light with an eye mask or jacket sleeve.
