Drinkable Cinnamon Hearts

Cinnamon hearts are the underdogs of holiday treats – they’re not A-list confectionary celebs like the Cadbury Creme Egg or the candy cane. But I love ‘em, and if you do, too, here’s a fun recipe I made up to transform the humble cinnamon heart into a delicious Valentine’s date drink!

(It’s stupidly easy, but don’t admit that to your loved one…just accept the praise and the sexual favours that may ensue)

Combine 2 cups milk with 60 cinnamon hearts in a saucepan on the stove. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the candies dissolve. What’s great is they flavour, sweeten and colour the milk! Pour into mugs (preferably glass, so you can admire the Barbie-esque hue), spritz with real whipping cream and dress up with sprinkles and an extra cinnamon heart! Serve to your pookie wookie snookums.

The Glorious First Snowfall

I don’t care if you grumble for the rest of winter, but the first snowfall must be respected! I feel it’s my duty to greet it with the enthusiasm of an 8-year-old banking on a school cancellation.

Yesterday, I had the very distinct pleasure of a visit from my longtime friend, Julia! We’ve known each other since grade seven. It was Julia who introduced me to Hole, incense and black lipstick back in high school, and this morning she introduced me to…SNOW! “It’s snooowiiinnnng!” she sang, and did a little snow-appreciation dance in our guest room.

We decided we MUST rush out and get covered in slush.

It’s getting awfully Christmassy here in Kleinburg!

You know what else makes for a lovely snow beverage? Mulled wine. It gets your cheeks all aglow.

Simply tie up the aforementioned spices in a cheesecloth baggie and throw it in a pot of wine with some orange rind. Heat just enough to infuse the wine with the flavours – do not boil, fool!  I loves me spice-spiked anything.

I may infuse my mouth with spice by making a tiny spice baggie and chewing on it all day. The “clean” chewing tobacco.

I just want to offer a heartfelt thank you to all the people who left long, insightful comments on my last post, Getting All Honest on You. I feel so much better knowing there are others who are experiencing similar confusion! Today’s big crisis: do I make a snow angel or a snowman?

Half As Wise

I’ve been avoiding the big wisdom teeth pull for about 16 years now. In the past, every time a dentist brought it up, I changed the topic. (“So…braces for dogs. What’s your take on that?”)

I was absolutely petrified of everything involved with widsom tooth extraction – “going under,” chipmunk cheeks, dry socket, etc. Boy, I’ll tell ya, people who have had it done really know how to sell it. There’s a reason why I didn’t mention it on Facebook until it was a fait accompli.

But, after years of no dentistry (see: “freelance journalism”), my teeth were in a real fix. I finally got the courage and the cash to see a new dentist in the spring and there was no doubt about it: those upper wisdom teeth were as rotten as the contents of the compost bin I forgot to put out last week.

So, yesterday was the big day. Luckily, my teeth were fully erupted so no need to be unconscious. There was, however, nitrous oxide (a.k.a. laughing gas) on offer, and I tried to huff that stuff as deeply as possible as soon as I got in the chair. A few minutes later, my heart was still pounding like a hyperactive bass drum. “I don’t think it’s working…” I said to the dentist. He cranked it up. I was hoping it would feel like being incredibly sloshed whilst scuba diving in a sea of rainbows, but it wasn’t like that at all. Unfortunately, I was present enough to know that an evil needle was invading my gums. And that wasn’t making me laugh. At all. [ CLICK TO CONTINUE ]
